Miguel Castro
When paper becomes haute couture
Paper dresses? Absolutely!
What can you make out of paper? During the ARTexpo on Friday evening, October 16, in the Wilhelminapark Wormerveer, you will discover that the possibilities are endless. One of the special artists featured at the closing event of the IFIKZ MaakMeeFestival is Miguel Castro ( www.miguel-castro-art.com ). He creates impressive artworks from paper in which light, shadow, and movement play a leading role. And something very special: his beautiful paper dresses will be showcased on a catwalk.
Miguel Castro, an artist with a razor-sharp eye
Miguel Castro, born in Manila, grew up in a family of bookbinders. Paper was therefore literally instilled in him from an early age. He has built an international reputation with his distinctive papercutting art. His work has been exhibited in Australia, the Philippines, Germany, France, and the Netherlands (where he now lives), among other places.
With a razor-sharp knife, Castro cuts extremely detailed patterns from paper. Flowers, leaves, birds, and human figures seem to grow from a single sheet of paper. By cutting away parts of the paper, a fascinating interplay between form and emptiness emerges. When light falls on his work, something magical happens: the cut-out patterns come to life and cast unique shadows on their surroundings.
Castro draws inspiration from nature, but also from his own cultural background and the various countries in which he has lived. His work often deals with connection, tranquility, and the relationship between man and nature. The result is refined and almost fairytale-like, yet powerful at the same time.
Catwalk
For the ARTexpo, he is creating a number of extraordinary pieces. His paper dresses are worn by models ( who dares?!) walking down the catwalk in the park. In this way, paper transforms into fashion and takes on a completely different form of movement and life.
An evening full of light, art and movement
All of this becomes part of the special atmosphere of the ARTexpo, where artworks are illuminated in the dark and the Wilhelminapark transforms into a world of light, art, and imagination. Supplemented by a special dance performance, the evening becomes a surprising conclusion to the IFIKZ MaakMeeFestival.
Come and see on Friday, October 16 at 7:00 PM in the Wilhelminapark in Wormerveer and discover what happens when paper, art, fashion, light, and movement come together. Admission is free.
